Case competition was on Saturday at 7:30, and my team and I stayed up till 4am working on the case the night before. Nonetheless, I can say I was exhausted, having to wake up at 6:30. Anyways, my team and I didn't advance to finals this time, we but definitely learned a lot of how to improve and be competitive next time. We messed on financials and were unable to provide a definite ROI on the 75million marketing investment. Also, I think question and answering flustered us up as well. Saturday afternoon after case, I decided not to go right to bed because I wanted to be able to fall asleep later that night, even though I got 2 and a half hours of sleep the night before.
Instead, I went for a jog right away, showered, did some spanish homework, went to the mall with some friends to eat California Pizza Kitchen, and then read some more Middlesex before going to bed around 10 or 11. Today, I woke up around 11:30, refreshed but sore from sleeping. I did so much homework though, gosh, I can't believe how productive I was-- did philosophy, spanish, accounting (for tuesday), and stat homework (for wednesday)! It's such a satisfying feeling getting all your work done early. The rest of the week, I want to spend reading Middlesex and also just relaxing. Also, I'm going to have to start preping for Hong Kong! (Ie. visa, passport, flight, planning courses, etc.)
Thinking about Hong Kong, I'm getting kind of nervous, but I'll basically be in a foreign country for 4 months. The biggest thing is having to organize and plan getting there and getting over the hump of assimilating into the country. Though I'm Cantonese, I'm still American and won't really fit in (my accent is very American). I'm still very excited, but I have to work out so many details such as registration and details.
Well, of to enjoy the rest of my Sunday!

So the Sleep Deprivation Begins Again...
Music: With You- Chris Brown
Mood: Droggy
It's only Tuesday, and I feel like I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Some how, I managed to drag myself out of bed, but my eyes feel heavy and I'm pretty zoned out right now in all my classes. I'm currently in my philosophy class right now, and the only way I can bring myself to stay awake is to blog.
Case competition started yesterday, and the actual case day is Saturday. I'm working with the same people I worked with during the last case-- Driva Consulting. This case is a strictly marketing case, which isn't as fun, but we'll see what we get done. Yesterday, I was in Reliant until midnight, and I feel the same will happen for the rest of the week.. At least I've already finished all my homework. I just need to finish my psychology paper (due friday), work ahead in accounting for thursday, and prepare for my oral activity in spanish. Other than that, it's going to be case, case, case all week, day and night.
I'm so sleep deprived right now. =( All I really want to do is curl up in my bed or lay out in the sun and read some more Middlesex. I'm 200 pgs into the book, and the plot just started to develop. I'm anxious to find out what happens, and it's irking me that I don't have time this week to read!
Well, that's all I've got going on this week. If ya'll don't hear from me this week, it'll be okay. I'm probably working on case or sleeping in my classes (or at the gym).

Pleasure Reading
Music: Realize- Colbie Callait
Mood: Relaxed
This week has been pretty relaxing. I haven't been too busy with classes and student organizations, so I've been enjoying myself. Over break, I was deprived of the gym so had to to jog around my neighborhood and do some ab work and pushups myself. This week, since I've been back, I've taken full advantage of the gym again! I went to group cycling on Monday and Wednesday and will be going on Friday as well, since classes are canceled on Saturday and Sunday. Other than gym-ing, going to classes (some of them), and enjoying the weather (except for the random downpour at 3:30 on Tuesday), I've been relaxing and doing quite a bit of pleasure reading.
I finished Water for Elephants on Tuesday night. The novel was interesting and fun to read but not exactly stimulating. It was captivating because it revealed the whole life of a circus life and what that's like (the ups and downs) but overall, it was a simple read--the writing was of the quality I read in like 9th grade. Anywho, it was still enjoyable. On Wednesday, I started Middlesex, which is about a hermaphrodite. I've only read a bit of it, but so far, I love it. The writing is definitely of better quality and is enjoyable to read as well. I want to get far in that book by Saturday because this weekend is going to be packed. Since my team and I (Driva Consulting) will be competing in the McCombs Case Competition next week, which will take every last minute of next week, I'm going to write my Psychology paper this weekend (due next Friday) and also work ahead on some accounting homework as well.
The highlight of today was participating in a conference call with the CEO of the automotive company I interned with this past summer. As some of ya'll know, I interned in Detroit this summer and during some of the summer, I worked on an internal case competition to market a new vehicle to the younger age group using online channels. Apparently, the project we all worked on was awarded an efficiency award by the CEO and thus, he had the participating teams, the case organizers, and the marketing team meet to congratulate us. It was pretty exciting to hear what the CEO had to say. They're even mailing me a certificate and a little trinket for winning the award. It was pretty exciting.
Oh, on the subject of books, I read on yahoo today that Borders Books is going through some troubles. It even faces being sold. I have like $50 in borders gift cards, so this means I'll probably go out and buy a couple more books and use up that card so that I don't lose this $50.
Also, in my research, Professor Burris and I are going to start conducting our experiments next next week. We are finalizing our questionnaires and will begin to recruit participants. We going to do a trial run on Tuesday at 3:30 and 4:30, followed by the real experiment the next week Monday through Thursday. If any one is interested in participating, please email me and I can jot your name down. For your participation, you will be entered into a lottery of amounts of $100 and $50 with a 1 in 10 chance of winning. All subjects are required to bring a friend to the experiment. I especially need people for this Tuesday either 3:30 or 4:30. Please let me know.
And on the note of doing experiments, I had a follow-up with the claustrophobia study. The proctor had me come back 4 wks after the experiment and had me go back in the box to test my anxiety levels. Apparently I don't have claustrophobia anymore (even though I still know I'd avoid small/crowded spaces).
Well, with that, I'm going to go back to reading Middlesex, looking forward to the weekend.
I have fallen in love with Colbie Cailat's Realize. I liked Bubbly, but Realize is even better. It's melodic and calming! Check out the video.

Springing Forward
Music: Holiday- Green Day
Mood: Driving Back to Austin (don’t worry, I’m in the passenger seat)
This week was definitely relaxing. I’m quite sad that I didn’t end up going to New York ro Seattle or anywhere for that matter. On Sunday, I found some cheap tickets to NYC for like $230 but ended up not going because I was kind of sketched out about living in an NYC Hostel, though I feel it would have been cool to check out some broadway shows and go shopping. I was also looking for last minute tickets to Seattle to visit my brother, but apparently it’s hard to find cheap last minute tickets to the west cost (east coast flights are cheaper.)
Nontheless, this break was much needed, though. It was good to get away from Austin and all the stress related to obligations and things like that. Over break, I slept a lot, relaxed, watched TV, saw some movies, and shopped a bit. I actually got to read for fun for a change. I read Born On a Blue Day, an autobiography by an autistic guy who is able to express how he sees numbers as shapes and colors. I also read a book called Aloft which was about a older guy who has a mid-life crisis. This book was interesting because the main character, Jerry, went through a divorce, his dad is in a retirement home, his son took over the family business which was about to go bankrupt, and his daughter is pregnant but also has cancer. The plot really was engaging and his writing was fun to read. I started this third book, Water for Elephants, I’m hoping to be able to lay out at Gregory pool for some time this week and finish up the book. There’s something about pleasure reading. I don’t know what it is, but it’s just relaxing. Something that a movie can’t come close to emulating. This week, reading to my heart’s desire, in some weird way reminding me of this past summer, where I was able to work 8 to 5 and then curl up to a nice book. Maybe I’m just a big old nerd.
Anyways, I was writing emails and updating my outlook calendar, and I already started filing up the calendar with dates and obligations. It was quite sad. I felt as if I was starting to sell my life away again.
There’s only about two months of school left, and then that’s the end of my sophomore year—that means I’ll be an upperclassman. And I’m not ready for it yet! College has gone by so quickly, and in reflection of what I’ve done so far, I’ve realized that it’s not much at all. I mean, I’m not trying to sell myself short or anything, because granted, I’ve sure done a lot. I just feel that I haven’t made an impact yet—an impact that’s meaningfully helped others. I know through BHP recruiting and hopefully this blog, I’ve touched others by helping them, but what I really want to do is volunteer. I think I’ve talked about this before, but I really want to do something that changes UT or the Austin community. I mean, I spend countless hours working as a researcher, involved in business council, and studying, but I’d love to devote some time to help those who are disadvantaged. I think I first realized this volunteering at Explore UT. I was volunteering with my English professor helping attract people to his “U-Tea Alice In Wonderland Party.” While helping out, I meat a father and son from Dallas. The kid wasn’t more than 10 years old, but his dad was already talking about how he’d already saved up enough money to send his kid to UT, and was encouraging his son to study hard so that he’d get into UT. Then I met some other students who were maybe in middle or high school. They came from an underprivileged high school , and from talking with them, they would be the first to go to college—in fact, they were wearing t-shirts that said something like future college student 2012.” Something about those shirts inspired me. Maybe it’s because going to UT, we’re all pretty fortunate to either have gotten in and somehow managed to finance our educations (either through our parents, student loans, or scholarships). I think it would nice to be able to mentor a high schooler and help him or her through the college application process. I think I realized that I often take college for granted, as if it’s expected of everyone. And the sad thing is, it’s not. Some people only dream to go to college. I want to do something in these next two years of my college career that help those who are disadvantaged from going to college. I don’t know how, but I want to do something that impacts others.
Well, I didn’t mean to get on some tangent, but oh well. Oh, and lastly, I’m still hoping to get into the Hong Kong Study Abroad Program (HKUST). I had a “nightmare” over break that I didn’t get into HKUST and instead had to go to the only last program open… Cancun.. and freaked out! Haha. What a bizarre dream that was! I find out about HKUST hopefully this week or next week, and I’m kind of banking on the fact that I’ll get in. I have to get in, because I don’t have a back-up and I don’t have housing for this fall either! Hehe.
OK, well, my laptop battery is dying (I wish I got a bitter battery when I bought my laptop). I’ll post this post when I get back to Austin. I hope everyone had a great week. One of my friends, Margaret, went snowboarding over break and had a blast. I’ve gone skiing and loved it, but after hearing stories from her, I really want to try out snowboarding now.. I guess there’s always next spring break! Hope everyone has safe travels and welcome back!
I’ll end with something to think about. Here’s an excerpt from Aloft by Chang-rae Lee:

And it occurred to me that in this new millennial life of instant and ubiquitous connection, you don’t in fact communicate so much as leave messages for one another, these odd improvisational performances, often sorry bits and samplings of ourselves that can’t help but seem out of context. And then when you do finally reach someone, everyone’s so out of practice or too hopeful or else embittered that you wonder if it would be better not to attempt contact at all. (pg. 8)For me, I’m so engrained in my email, cell phone, and Facebook, but I’m not sure how much face-to-face contact I have with others. What about you? Is this true? What do you think?

Spring Break?
Music: Whatsername- Green Day
Mood: Awesome Week!
I'm pretty much done with my week. I've already finished my PHL paper and PSY midterm and have turned in both. I finished my spanish essa revision due on Friday, and I just completed my accounting homework for Thursday. I'm ready to go home.
The thing is, I don't have spring break plans!!! I've been looking on kayak.com and continental.com for cheap flights to ANYWHERE. Today, I found tickets to Pensacola, FL for $99 round-trip. I was just about to buy them but then called my mom and tried to figure out hotel and transportation if I were to go there, and then when I checked it tonight, tickets for that price sold out. I was so irked. I totally would have gone to Pensacola by myself. I'm actually hoping to find a last minute cheap ticket to New York or Boston so I can just visit the city by myself and try to be independent. I'm not sure if that's weird or not--going on a trip by myself? To some it is, but I think here at UT, I'm around people so much that I think I just want to get away for break. In any case, I'm going home on Friday at 11 and won't think of school or anything until I get back.
Tomorrow, (Wednesday), I'm actually pretty busy. This week, compared to most, has been very relaxing and chill. Tomorrow, I've got class till 12:30, then I'll gym till 2 before I grab lunch. At 4 I've got a BHP recruiter photo shoot. I already have my own profile on the BHP website as a student recruiter (speaking of which, I have added it to the blog), but now we figured we should have a group photo with all the recruiters, so I'll do that at 4. Then at 5:30, the BBA career services is having a strategic consulting career panel in the Special Events Room, which I am going to attend. A contact I had with one of the consulting firms actually emailed me saying that he is going to be there and that I should try to attend. I'm not going to lie, I hope to land a strategic consulting internship the summer of my junior year in hopes of doing consulting full-time. I suppose that's the plan for now. We'll see if the panel answers my questions tomorrow.
Also, I hope to ask the panel tomorrow how recruiting works since I hope to be studying abroad in the Fall. The study abroad applications were due on Monday, and I hope to hear back some time after spring break. I'm excited yet nervous. I hope I get HKUST because for me, it's either HKUST or bust. Haha. Oh well. After that panel, I've got do to a BHP interview with an applicant and then BC meeting.
Oh, and random thought for the day: I totally forgot to bring athletic shorts to cycling today. It was a pretty bad feeling cycling and sweating in Gap khaki shorts, but at least I can say I did it. =)
Here's an overdue photo of Driva Consulting-- Steven, Bijal, Shruti, and myself.

And lastly, here's a lovely photo representing somewhere where I'd love to go for break, ideally. =p

Early to Bed
Music: Para Tu Amor- Juanes
Mood: Resting
I just finished a very productive weekend. I got a lot of work done and really just spent time by myself to catch up with life. After the accounting test, I really wasn't to excited about school, especially since I had a spanish test at 10AM the next day. After that, I just felt like relaxing this weekend.
Life has been going so fast since this semester started, and I haven't had time to introspect on my own life. I was able to do so this weekend and that was good.
There's one more week until spring break, and I still don't have any plans. I've considered going to New Orleans and Chicago or even going to a beach, the problem is, most of my friends are just going back home and chilling. I really want a different spring break compared to last year. I'm considering visiting my brother in Seattle for a couple days. I probably will end up doing that because I haven't seen him since January and wouldn't mind going and checking out Seattle again because I love the city.
But other than that, I'm really ready for this week to be over. I've got a philosophy paper due on Friday and also a take-home test due on Thursday as well. Other than that, there's not much going on. Oh, and I'm excited about the primary elections. I really hope the outcome I'm supporting works out because it's really just frustrating. But I won't go into a political rant right now. It's interesting how Texas has become so vital in this election. What I don't like though, is that Texas has both a primary and a caucus. I already sent in my absentee ballot but can't caucus because I can't go back to Fort Bend to caucus... I'm being disenfranchised and it stinks!
Well, I'm off to bed. Have a great week!
